On the 12th June, at Waipapa Marae (University of Auckland) the Faculty of Law will be holding a day long symposium on Māori Engagement with the Extractive Industry.

The aim of the Symposium is to explore Maori engagement with the industry, both off-shore and on-shore, with a focus on best practice in relation to consultation, preparation of impact assessments and agreement making.

Speakers will consider the implications of recent developments in international law on government regulation and business practice and policy - including the UN's Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - as well as best practice examples from Canada and Australia.

The symposium is supported by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga and the New Zealand Law Foundation and organised in association with the New Zealand Centre for Human Rights Law, Policy and Practice, University of Auckland.
