The NPM Foundational Project; Promoting Effective Māori Leadership and Decision Making for Prosperous Economies of Wellbeing – Te Whakatairanga i te Ārahitanga Whai Hua me te Māori te Whakatau Kaupapa is turning a microscope on Māori leadership and decision-making as it plays out in modern Aotearoa.

Decisions made on the marae, and within iwi corporations and Māori-run businesses affect who gets to enjoy the fruits of the burgeoning Māori economy, which is now worth more than $40 billion.

With this project the NPM Researchers Dr Rachel Wolfgramm, Dr Chellie Spiller, Professor Paul Tapsell, Dr Ella Henry, Robert Powhare and Ngaroimata Reid want to highlight what is working well, and act as conduits for the collective wisdom that already exists - so that modern tribal leaders, administrators, hapū and whānau can draw on this knowledge and be more confident about forging productive pathways forward into the future.

Many people in iwi trustee roles have expressed how much they want to get it right with their settlements. There is a real sense of burden and responsibility about making sure they make good decisions and an awareness that they are actors in this historic moment. Iwi with recent or imminent settlements can benefit from the precedents set and lessons learned by tribes such as Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Whātua, Ngāti Kahungunu and others, and identify whether there are broad principles that could be applied across different settings to help them make good choices about the management and growth of their assets, businesses and enterprises and ultimately on the future well-being of their people.
