NPM Summer Internships
Please note that 2016-2017 applications are now closed.
Do you want to drive your research career forward? Do you want to work with some of NZ's foremost Indigenous researchers? Do you want to be part of our vision of Māori leading NZ into the future?
Sir Maui Pomare said that "Education is to be the future paddle for our canoe" and here at NPM this philosophy drives us to not only strive for advances across all of our research themes, but also to continue to offer opportunities wherever we can to young Indigenous researchers of the future.
The NPM Summer Internships have been part of this drive now for the past 12 years, and over the upcoming 2016-2017 summer these internships are once again open for applicants.
This programme is designed to provide experience for Māori students interested in advancing their skills and capacity in Indigenous research, and each internship is valued at $5500, over 10 weeks.
Earlier this year 30 projects were submitted by senior NPM Investigators from around the country and approved by NPM's Research Leadership Team, and over the coming 2016 - 2017 summer at least 15 of these projects will be selected for Māori pre-doctoral students to work on.
Interns will work for 10 weeks, under the direction and guidance of NPM Investigators on one of the selected research projects. Each of these projects is aligned with the themes and programme's of the centre.
Students can be upper level undergraduates, post-graduates, or currently undertaking a Master’s programme but they cannot be enrolled in a PhD programme or already have a PhD.
At least 15 internship positions will ultimately be selected and your input will be used to match these internships to projects. This year we are asking our network to assist us with the allocation of projects to applicants.
The initial 30 projects range from urban regeneration and Māori law, to the use of drones in Māori environmental strategies and Māori land use, Indigenous Psychology, the fishing industry, te reo Māori and the Māori economic renaissance. These summer internship opportunities are available all over the country, from the Hokianga to Aotea (Great Barrier Island), Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Pōneke (Wellington) to Ōtautahi (Christchurch) and Ōtepoti (Dunedin).
