A New MAI Journal Coordinator
NPM has welcomed a new member of staff into our offices in 2019 - Carel Smith (Te Aitanga ā-Māhaki, Ngā Ariki Kaiputahi, Ngāi Tūhoe).
Carel is taking on the role of MAI Journal Coordinator and will be overseeing the production of articles submitted to MAI journal from submission through to publication.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Māori Studies (First Class Honours) and Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting from the University of Otago. She also holds a Diploma in Te Pīnakitanga o te reo Kairangi from Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Carel has previously worked in the field of education. More recently she was at the Ministry of Education supporting the education outcomes of Māori tauira and their whanau.
Prior to this she worked for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Maia Ltd where she contributed to the design, implementation, and evaluation of education projects and programmes until becoming the Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the administrative functions of the organization and support the CE and Board of Directors to meet their outcomes. Carel has a passion for improving the outcomes for Māori whānau and communities, as well as te reo Māori.
Previous MAI Journal Co-ordinator Kiri West-McGruer is transitioning into her full time doctorate studies this year. We wish her all the best in these endeavours and thank her for her outstanding work at Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga over the past two years.
