NPM's 2019 Annual Report has been published and released to all our partners and network this past week.

Once again NPM demonstrates our considerable contribution to Māori scholarship, Māori communities, and the field and recognition of Indigenous research, as New Zealand’s Māori Centre of Research Excellence.

Our ongoing excellence and enrichment of the research landscape in Aotearoa New Zealand was highlighted last year with the presentation of the inaugural Royal Society Te Apārangi Te Rangaunua Hiranga Māori Award to NPM. This award was for excellent, innovative, co-created research that has made a distinctive contribution to Māori community wellbeing and development.

In 2019 many of NPM's research investigators across our partner institutions were recognised for their contributions and excellence in their fields and together this demonstrates not only our research excellence, but just as importantly reflects an understanding of the importance and place of NPM's research and scholarship now more than ever.

Over the past year NPM and our researchers have engaged with over 80 Māori communities, delivered 52 Māori-led research projects across our themes of Whai Rawa, Te Tai Ao, Mauri Ora and our integrated programme of Te Reo me Ngā Tikanga Māori, and produced over 450 research outputs.

Kerensa Johnston, Chief Executive of Wakatū Incorporation, commenced as our new Board Chair at the start of the year, and we launched and delivered multiple papers via our Te Arotahi expert policy series, with strong government and media engagement. We also continued to grow Māori research leaders and support Māori students around the country with our comprehensive and far reaching scholarships, internship programmes and MAI Te Kupenga, including the annual MAI Doctoral Conference which was held at Puketeraki Marae, North Otago.

In 2019 we developed our future plans for NPM with an application for eight more years of Centre of Research Excellence funding. This process is currently in its final stages, and we hope to hear the outcome before year end.

NPM's work, together with our collective energy and outcomes all contribute to achieving our vision of Māori Leading Aotearoa New Zealand into the Future.
